Today’s opening game between Butcher Construction and the Kettle was won by the Kettle 9-4. In a game where Kettle could secure a 3rd place finish and avoid the play in game, they faced 2nd place Butcher Construction. Kettle jumped out to an early 5-0 lead holding the Butchers scoreless for the first three innings, throwing out 2 runners at home plate. But the Butchers came back with one in the 4th and 3 more in the 5th to get within one run of the Kettle. But the Kettle answered with three of their own in the bottom of the 5th to take an 8-4 lead. It was pretty much scoreless for both teams from that point forward with the Kettle getting one run in the bottom of the 8th to hold in for a 9-4 victory. The Kettle defense was stellar in holding the Butchers to only 4 runs in 9 innings. Despite hitting into 3 double plays, the Kettle did score 9 runs in their 8 innings at bat. Leading the way for the Kettle was Chuck Berez with 3 hits, including a double and 3 RBIs. 2 hits each for Howard Thompson, Bill Matson, Gary Frueholz, Hal Hammersmith and Warren Galloway. The 2nd game between Hangar Inn and the Jets saw the Jets winning a very close game 12-11. The Jets were led by Bob Julius’s 4 hits (2 HR’s), Dario Serna (2 dbls + triple) Doug Bagley and Robert Hernandez (dbl) all with 3 hits, George Wolfe (dbl) and John Rosenthal both with 2 hits while Paul Siegel, Andy Shelby, Howard Rudich, Doug Freeman and Karl Primm all contributed a hit each. The Hangar Inn players were led by Jeff Walsh and Ken Sackman (triple) both with 4 hits, Kelly Kahl had 3 hits and Harold Kingsly, Hugh John McDonald, Frank Mazzotta, Ron Rotstein and Bill Louie all with 2 hits in the game.
