(Blue Manager) The Blue Team came out swinging as 10 players came up to bat against the Grey team, plating 5 runs in the top of the first. That was all that was needed in a 13-1 victory for Blue. David Inouye’s outstanding defense & Doug Freeman’s outstanding pitching kept Blue cruising and Bruce Difley’s base clearing triple was the exclamation point on a one-sided game. Blue’s defense was solid turning several double plays when Grey threatened. Great individual efforts up and down the lineup. (Grey Manager) Some times in softball a team will sometimes not play to their potential. Today was that day. The Blue team jumped out to a 8 nothing lead up to the 5th before the Grey Team could finally score. The Grey team could only produce 10 hits and leave 4 players total on base. Mauro went 2 for 2 and brought in the only run for the grey team. Bill Stirton was 2 for 3 and struck out two batters, both looking. The final score was 13-1 Blue team. Blue team hit very well offensively and the pitching created two double plays to end a couple of innings. Their pitching kept the grey team in check shutting down the top six batters to 6 hits and 2 strike outs in 18 attempts.
The Second game today the Red and Green teams played to a tie 12-12. The Red team was led by the 3 hits each from Howard Thompson (2 doubles), Dan Sakoda (double) and sub Dennis Groat (douible). Robert Kurtz (homerun), Jim Morrison, Al del Rosario and Gary Neiman (2 doubles) all with 2 hits in the game. (Green Manager) Green was very offensive across the board today, with no one wearing a collar. Greer Wesson led the offense, going 4 for 4 including a double and triple. Sub Hugo Furth had 3 hits, as did Ed Lambert and Ken Widelitz. Everyone else had 2 hits except for one Greenie with only 1. You know who you are:) Unfortunately for Green, too many were left on base. Green did manage 4 straight hits to start the bottom of the 7th. and score 3 runs to tie the game, the last coming in on Charlie Golden’s hit. Green had the bases loaded with one out before Red turned a game ending double play. (Green Manager) Green’s defense today was offensive. After the first inning, in which Red posted a 5 spot on lots of “not at ’em” line drives, Green let up too many “senior base hits” (aka errors) in later innings. The same thing could be said about Red’s defense. For Green defensively there were a couple of highlights. Alan Sperling made a catch in left center after a long run. Audie Freeman’s relay to Paul Thiel at the plate saved a run, ultimately preserving the tie.
Red’s collective sigh of relief after the double play was audible.
While there are no ties in baseball, today’s tie was a Senior softball parity league just result.
